Shoei Helmet Sizing Guide

NOTE: These sizing charts are provided by the manufacturer and/or distributor responsible for this brand. Atlantic Moto makes no guarantees regarding the accuracy of measurements and/or fit provided on this page.

Correctly fitting and sizing a helmet is an extremely important process. There are many factors that go into getting the right helmet size, no matter what you've "always worn". Factors like head shape, cheek thickness, crown padding, and so on go far beyond a simple size measurement. The right helmet will not only be quieter and not move around on your head, it will do a much better job of protection.

Helmet Buying Advice from Shoei North America

1. Measure your head size. To do this, pass a tape measure horizontally around your head at a height of about one inch (2.5cm) above your eyebrows. When done properly, you will have measured the largest part of your head.

2. Check your measurement with the helmet sizing chart (can be found under the helmets section, after selecting the model you are interested in), and select the closest size. As the helmet may not always exactly meet your head size, and your head measurement may fall between two sizes, first try on the smaller size.

3. Expand the helmet opening by pulling outwards on each chinstrap, and slide your head into the helmet. Pull the chinstraps only, not the chinstrap covers, as pulling on the covers may rip them. If the helmet is not tight, it is too big for you. If you are unfamiliar with helmets you may be reluctant to pull the helmet down, as it may feel too tight. Even if the helmet is difficult to put on, please use the smallest helmet possible. The helmet should feel snug.

4. Now that the helmet is on:

  • Check that the helmet inner lining fits snugly all around your head.
  • Check that the top pad presses on the top of your head.
  • Check that the cheek pads press up against your cheeks. When you open and close your mouth, you should drag your teeth along the inside of your cheeks.
  • Check to make sure that you cannot easily slide your finger into the helmet along the side of your temple.
  • Hold the helmet with one hand on each side. Without moving your head, try to move the helmet up and down, and side to side. You should feel the skin of your head and face being pulled as you try to move the helmet. If you can move the helmet around easily, it is too big. Try a smaller size. Please note that during this check, the chinstraps should be properly fastened.

Shoei FAQ

Where can I buy Shoei helmets in USA ?
In USA Shoei motorcycle helmets are distributed by our various importers. If you are searching for your nearest Authorized Shoei Dealer - such as Atlantic Moto please contact the importer who is responsible for your country.

Where can I get information about prices or about the availability of Shoei Helmets ?
If you require information about the availability or the prices of Shoei helmets or spare parts please contact the Shoei importer in USA.

Is a crashed / dropped shoei helmet still safe to wear?
Current safety helmets are designed to absorb the energy of an accident by being destroyed. Even a small impact can damage the integrity of the shell or the inner liner. Quite often this damage may be unnoticeable to the untrained eye. Therefore, any shoie helmet involved in an impact should not be used again.

Does Shoei provide motorcycle racing support?
Shoei helmets are worn by some of the worlds top racers and Shoei does provide some amateur racing support too.
If you are interested in Shoei sponsorship please contact your local importer. Due to the overwhelming number of request for sponsorship they receive each year, they unfortunately cannot help all the racers that deserve support.

How do I clean the shoei helmet properly?
Inside: All our interiors are washable! If you own a helmet with a detachable interior, just remove it and wash it in lukewarm water. Please use a mild soap. If your helmet is not equipped with a detachable interior, please put the whole helmet into lukewarm water. After washing, the helmet must dry without the use of any drying tools like hairdryers, etc. In a warm and dry environment the drying time should take at least 48 hours. But again, PLEASE DO NOT USE ANY DRYING TOOLS as they may damage the inner liner of your helmet.
Outside: Please clean the outside of your helmet with water and a mild soap.
As Shoei helmets are painted, it is also possible to use car polish to keep the paint in a good condition.
Please do not use cleaning sprays or liquid window cleaner as they may damage the polycarbonate parts of the ventilation or your shield.
Shield: It is very important not to use any cleaning sprays or liquid window cleaner on your shield. Please clean your shield only with lukewarm water and a mild soap.
Tip: Put a wet towel on your shield, leave it there for some minutes and insects can be removed easily.

Can I paintbrush my Shoei helmet?
It is possible to repaint your Shoei helmet. You can use any colours which are not Nitro based. Please make sure that no aggressive fumes will enter the inside of the helmet.
You can also attach stickers to your helmet. They do not have any influence on the shell material.

Why is Shoei using different chin strap locks?
Shoei helmets are either equipped with our One-Touch-Buckle or the Double-D-Ring. Neither of them is safer than the other. For comfort oriented shoei models we prefer the One-Touch-Buckle. Once you have adjusted this kind of chin strap lock you can open and close it very easily. Our sport orientated models come with the Double-D-Ring. The reason is simply that Grand Prix Racers are forced to wear that system during the races and these helmet models have their origin on the racetrack.

Shoei - A Brief Company History

SHOEI has been dedicated to the development of superior helmet technology since 1958.

The company was started by the immense spirit and determination of its founder Eitaro Kamata, who designed and used his first products exclusively for the racing sector.

What is amazing even by today’s standards is the pace at which SHOEI became popular all over the world: starting in the late sixties, SHOEI’s reputation as a top quality brand spread first over the U.S., then later all over the motor markets of Europe.

What is also amazing is that everybody who was ever involved in the motor field can spell the name SHOEI, in spite of the fact that we are a team of less than 500 people worldwide.

But what is most amazing, especially to a Western observer, is the dedication of our factory staff. SHOEI manufactures all helmets (and all helmet parts) in Japan, even though manufacturing costs there have long since exceeded the level in many European countries. Why?

Because the men and women in our factories take every single helmet as a personal challenge. Faulty products are practically unheard of, as every single piece reflects the spirit, ambition and attention to detail that is so typical of SHOEI.

From the European Marketing team, we therefore extend a note of respect and appreciation to our factories.

To you as a motorcycle rider and customer, we emphasize that you will feel and enjoy this quality every time you put on your Shoei helmet.

Do not miss that pleasure - Buy your Shoei Helmets from Atlantic Moto

PRODUCTION & QUALITY ASSURANCE

For all the energy and passion that are invested in the development of a product, in the last resort the quality in series production must comply with the specifications from the development section. The following explains on the basis of the manufacturing process what it is that makes up the unique quality of SHOEI helmets.

Production of the helmet shell

SHOEI exclusively uses fibre-reinforced plastics that offer the best properties for the manufacture of a helmet shell. Thanks to having many years of experience and highly specialised employees, SHOEI is in a position to produce helmet shells that are extremely strong and yet light. Each helmet shell is marked personally by the employee who is responsible for it and thus puts his name on the line for the quality of this example.

Laser cutting

Here the helmet is given its final shape. All the protrusions that area created in manufacture are cut off. The openings for the visor and ventilation are burnt into the helmet shell with a laser. Finally the helmet is checked to ensure that it has the correct material thickness and weight.

Painting

Even though many production steps have been automated today, it is not possible to dispense with hand work in some areas. SHOEI combines hand work and automation in production to ensure superlative quality. *You can find further details on the painting under the Hand work heading.

Final assembly

The ventilation sliders, visor seals, inner shell and padding are assembled with great care. The helmet only goes for sale after the subsequent detailed final inspection.

This strict compliance with the production processes with associated quality control guarantees the constantly high SHOEI quality

HAND WORK MAKES THE SHOEI DIFFERENCE

Hand work plays a significant role in the manufacture of SHOEI helmets. This is especially clear when we take the example of the painting

1. Helmet Priming
After the helmet has been taken from the mould and all protruding parts and openings have been removed by a laser, the helmet is given its first priming. Then it is sanded and polished by hand and thus gets a
flawless surface for the subsequent painting operations. Working on the various helmet shells with their own peculiarities requires a high degree of experience.

2. Checking the priming
After the priming the helmet is carefully checked for any small blemishes and passed for further painting – but only if the surface is absolutely perfect.

3. The painting
The quality of a painting operation depends on the quality of its individual layers. It is virtually impossible to apply a high-quality coat of paint by machine even with the very latest polyurethane paints. For that reason only specially qualified employees are used in this work step.

4. Checking the painting
Subsequently the paintwork is subjected to close inspection for drips, inclusions and unevenness.

5. Applying the design
Elaborate, extremely detailed and spectacular graphics are part of the brand image of a SHOEI helmet. In a very complicated work step the designs are applied by hand by specially trained workers to the finished painted helmet.

6. Protective varnish
The last step in the painting process is the application of a clear varnish to the shell to protect the decoration and to give the helmet its unmistakable brilliance.

7. The final Helmet Inspection
Before it is passed for final assembly, the finished paintwork of the helmet is given one last meticulous inspection. Perfection, even in areas that are hardly visible.

Shoei Technology

SHOEI Ventilation
Helmet Ventilation is more effective if the air has a way out.

That is why SHOEI helmets do not only have effective intakes, but also devices through which hot air can leave the helmet. In the case of our top models, these are the Aero-Vortex-Ventilations.

With their characteristic V-shape, they create negative pressure making use of the riding windstream.

Warm air from the rider´s head is actively drawn out of the helmet.

The hyper dual liner ventilation:

Shoei top range helmets, the shock absorbing liner is made of two parts.

Between them, there is a system of ventilation channels which can very effectively carry fresh air

to the rider´s head, and vent out warm humid air.

The sightlation system:

All SHOEI full face helmets use a sophisticated ventilation intake below the shield window, which serves a double function:

It supplies fresh breathing air to the rider, but also steers an airflow along the inside of the shield.

This helps to keep the shields dry and clear of fog.

ADVANCED INTERIOR PADDING:

SHOEI helmets are comfortable, even at extreme speeds: This means that the padding must fit snuggly around your head, without ever feeling unpleasant. At the same time, the bottom of our interiors have no rims and no overlapping parts. This prevents turbulence and noise. For our top class models, we took perfection one step further and designed the entire interior to be detachable.

You can replace it in seconds, and you can choose between 7 different cheek pad sizes - what you get is a tailor-fit helmet, taking comfort to the maximum!

SHOEI CX-1 Shield Technology:

CX-1 is something unique - the CX-1 shield is not attached to the helmets with screws,

but by a spring loaded ratchet.

The shield is detached by pulling two levers, re-attached just as fast and it’s fit on the window seals

is fine-adjustable.

As the entire attachment unit is inside the shield, there is no need for (noisy) shield covers.

The shield itself functions as the sleekest cover you can imagine!

CX-1V Visor Technology:

The CX-1V shield mechanism system is the next level in SHOEI´s leading visor technology. Although both systems (CX-1 & CX-1V )look similar the differences can be found in the following features:

1. visor locking system

2. wider shield

Please Note: The CX-1V system fits only on the new developed helmet models starting from the X-Shoei RF1000 and Shoei X-Eleven

Shoei Maintenance & Replacement

As various materials are used during the production of a safety helmet like plastics, FRP, EPS and textiles, these parts must always be cleaned in a manner to suit the given material.

1. FRP Outer Shell
Only commonly available helmet wax or plastic cleaning agents should be used to clean any dirt off the helmet's surface. Two or more component agents should only be used for partial treatment, e.g. in the event of scratches, and should be applied very sparingly to avoid damaging the paint work or high-gloss finish.

2. Plastic Parts incl. Helmet Shield
Plastic parts should not be cleaned with agents containing solvents (including any petrochemicals) as these are absorbed by the plastic material, cause its slow deterioration and thus increase the risk of breaking. Acid or alkali-based corrosive cleaning agents as well as window cleaner are equally unsuitable. The shield should only be cleaned with water and a neutral cleaning agent. Heavily soiled areas can be gently cleaned using a soft toothbrush or a cotton swab.

3 Comfort Padding
Removable parts should be removed and washed by hand or in a washing net in the washing machine. Fixed padding should be wiped with a damp cloth, again using only a neutral cleaning agent. After cleaning or washing, all parts should be thoroughly dried out of direct sunlight in order to prevent the development of unpleasant odors.

4. Impact Absorption Liner
As EPS is neither solvent nor heat-proof, the impact absorption liner must be treated with particular care during cleaning. As in all other cases, the liner should be cleaned using only a damp cloth in order to avoid scratches or indentations.

Helmet Replacement
Ultimately, the useful service life of a safety helmet is dependent on the intensity and frequency of its use. Helmet replacement is recommended even if only one of the under-mentioned points applies:

  1. The helmet was subjected to an impact.
  2. The comfort padding or the retention system has become loose due to heavy use or display signs of deterioration.
  3. The synthetic foam padding displays signs of heavy use and the helmet feels too loose. Test: with the retention system fastened, the helmet turns to the side when you gently shake your head.
  4. There are indentations in the EPS liner and/or white scratches can be seen on surfaces with black paint.
  5. Even if none of these is applied, we, SHOEI, recommend replacement in 5 years after it's first purchased at retail.
